An indicator is a measurable quantity that helps us understand the health status of an ecosystem, much as human health is gauged by indicators such as blood pressure, that are routinely monitored over time. NOAA collects, analyzes, models and produces extensive data, information, and decision-support products related to the state of marine, coastal, and aquatic ecosystems, their biota, and the human communities that depend upon them. There is no shortage of ecosystem indicators that convey the status and trends of these systems across regions and NOAA program missions. This information is made available via multiple, often mission-specific, product types and is dispersed across disparate access points. This website is intended as a centralized resource to provide access to a select set of regionally focused and nationally consistent indicators that contribute to regional ecosystem “report cards”. The expectation is that these report cards would become standard and expected sources of information for NOAA’s stakeholders and other ocean-user communities. In addition to, and in support of these summary products, this site will provide access to important regional resources, including websites, analyses and the environmental data underlying them.
